June 30th... Have You Noticed?

Today is June 30th. Have you noticed what I've done? The calendar is a hint... LOL!!

My purse today was my black "rocker chick" satchel. It has a ton of silver hardware. I wore chunky silver jewelry... earrings and a bracelet and this bag was the perfect complement.

Teaser Tuesday!

I LOVE Teaser Tuesday.
Grab your current read.
Let the book fall open to a random page.
Share with us two (2) “teaser” sentences from that page, somewhere between lines 7 and 12.
You also need to share the title of the book that you’re getting your “teaser” from … that way people can have some great book recommendations if they like the teaser you’ve given!

"He was credible. Years of trampled emotions were threaded through his drawn-out words."

I entered a publisher's drawing and didn't win so I picked it up at the library. It had been on my "radar" for a while and, after reading Misfit Mom's review... http://misfitandmom.wordpress.com/page/2/... I looked forward to reading it. So far, so good. I do love the cover. It really looks like the perfect beach read :D

My bag today was my very large (which suits me just fine!) zebra bag. I have found that, even with its bold print, this purse is very versatile. When I first recived it, I carried it, mainly, when the weather was cooler. But, now, I've been using it more and more when the weather is more summery.

Musing Mondays

What do you think of books that receive a lot of hype? (think of the “Twilight” saga, or “Harry Potter”, or “The Da Vinci Code”). Do you read them? Why, or why not?

I'll probably contradict myself but, oh well, here goes... I generally stay away from books that have a lot of "mainstream" hype.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with well-deserved hype... Harry Potter is a prime example. It is extremely well-written with an imaginative story and captivating chacters. When it was published, it, almost, became its own genre. Because J and M were so young at that time, I would read it to them. As they grew older, it transitioned to them reading it to us. Eventually, it became an independent reading book. We even went to a few midnight release parties.

I have found that the hype surrounding women's fiction or book club books is usually just that... hype. Apparently, these authors have great PR machines. These books are lacking in something that I find completely necessary for me to consider a novel a great read... IT HAS TO BE WELL-WRITTEN!! So many of these books... DaVinci Code, Twilight, The Shack, Eat Pray Love, etc... aren't well-written. I don't mind reading books like that... everyone needs "mind candy" every once in a while. Just don't try to pass it off as great literature. It's not!! It's, more often than not, a semi-interesting story that has just been well publicized.

Since I've been part of the book blogosphere, I've seen a lot of hype about a lot of books. I have been part of virtual book tours and have, very luckily, only chosen great books to review here. I have read blogs where I know the author is just reviewing to get get the free book. I find that kind of sad. Yes, getting free books is wonderful. I don't have to tell you how exciting it is to see the UPS truck stop and drop off a package that you know has a book in it :D That said, though, I think bloggers who review and create hype for these undeserving novels are doing themselves and their readers a disservice. I have stopped reading their blogs as I'll bet other have, too. Yes, I know we all like different books but when all their reviews are wonderful, five stars and glowing, I start questioning their integrity.

On the flip side, some of the hype created on book blogs is completely deserved! I have discovered books and authors that I would have never read. I love that!

First Line Friday~

I began First Line Friday because first lines have always intrigued me since I heard an author say that writing the first sentence is, by far, the most difficult part of writing a novel. The reasoning was that a first sentence can make the reader continue reading or cause the book to be tossed aside. So, go to your To Be Read Pile, choose as many books as you want and share the first line. Be sure to include the title and author so that if your reader also finds it intriguing, they can find the book. Also, share your thoughts about the first line. Does it draw you in? Is it...exciting...thought provoking...scary...funny? Join in, if you enjoy first lines as much as I do! Be sure to use my great First Line Friday graphic and leave me a comment so I can read your blog! I'm not the only one with a meme celebrating first lines... Becky at Page Turners at http://pageturnersbooks.blogspot.com/ hosts Book Beginnings... check her blog, too.

"It was a month ago that I finally managed to convince myself I was still alive."
1906
James Dalessandro

This first line immediately pulls me in because I know, obviously, that the narrator survived the Great Earthquake. My curiousity is piqued, however, how she survived the last month.

This novel is a fictionalized first hand account of not only the earthquake and its aftermath... which I know plenty about. It's also the story what events that transpired before... which I don't know so much about. Events that some believe made the earthquake's destruction even worse than it should have been... potitical infighting, graft and corruption.

My son, J, and I watched a History Channel documentary about the earthquake and this book was mentioned. More likely than not, when he watches TV, he'll watch something "educational"... I love that about him. His favorite channels are History Channel, The Science Channel and Discovery. That's not to say that he doesn't watch "fun" shows... he does... but even in those he learns something. Many times he's told me that they discussed "Myth Busters" in his science class.

Jennifer's Crazy Book Giveaway!

From Jennifer's Crazy Book blog(http://www.crazy-for-books.com/)...
Debut Author Guest Post & Book Giveaway: Murder in the Abstract by Susan Shea
Thoughts by Jennifer (Crazy-for-Books)

Murder in the Abstract
Author: Susan Shea
Publication Date: June 24, 2010 (TODAY!)
Publisher: Avalon Books

Danielle O'Rourke's gala evening at the Devor Museum ends in catastrophe when the body of a young artist plummets from her office window. The police label it murder and suspect Dani, the Museum’s chief fundraiser. Self-preservation and an insider's understanding of how money moves the art world drive her to investigate who might have a motive for murder. Dani's playboy ex-husband and a green-eyed cop complicate matters as her search moves through the fashionable worlds of San Francisco and Santa Fe.

Susan Shea's Guest Post:
Jennifer asked me how I went about writing my debut mystery, from conception to completion. Every author has a somewhat similar story, but with details that tell a lot about the many avenues to success open to writers. If you’re writing a work of fiction – or even considering it – I hope you’ll keep that in mind: every writer gets to set her or his own set of rules. If you’re a reader (bless you!), this is one glimpse behind the curtain.

Here are the rules other, generous authors shared with me and that I adapted and took for myself:
1. Write what you know unless you love, love, love research. I chose to put my protagonist, Danielle O’Rourke in a professional setting I knew: fundraising for a large non-profit organization. She works at the fictional Devor Museum, which bears a passing resemblance to two of San Francisco’s real museums of art and antiquities. (I worked mostly for universities.) Had I chosen to write a tale of 18th century New England, I would have had tons of work to do before I felt comfortable writing a single word, and I think I would have been nervous about getting something wrong.
2. Write what you love. There’s always a lot of talk about writing what’s selling, but as any agent, editor, or author will tell you, you’re just chasing trends that may shift quickly and leave you stranded. It’s also true that passion, curiosity, and delight show in writing. I wrote about the contemporary art world, which fascinates me, and about the intersecting social circles of people who have considerable wealth and those who want some of that treasure. I hope readers catch my enthusiasm and sense of humor about those dynamics.
3. Write every day – almost. Waiting for lightning to strike, as those of us on the LadyKillers blog are discussing right now, is a tricky and frustrating way to approach the craft. There’s no substitute for what someone else called “butt in chair” every day, or at least on a frequent, regular, no-excuses schedule. I did what you’re never supposed to do – quit my day job – because I found I wasn’t able to develop a strong writing habit, given the demands of my job (which were a lot like Dani O’Rourke’s.) Finished the draft in five months.
4. Finish. It’s related to #3 but not quite the same thing. A successful author of a long-running series once told me, as I was complaining about my slow progress, to “just finish the book, Susan. Pretend there’s no back button on your keyboard.” What she meant was that we often spend too much time trying to perfect the first several chapters - rewriting, polishing, yada, yada – not realizing that our agent or editor may say, “Love the book, but the action that grabbed me starts in chapter four, so drop the first chapters.” The single most important thing you can do as a writer is finish the book! Plenty of time for tweaking later.
5. Celebrate. Seventy-five thousand words. First draft or last. Finding an agent. Selling the book. Seeing it in print. I’d been told many times by fellow members of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime that this is as important as any rule related to being a writer. Wow- 75,000 words, a whole book! Break out the chocolate chip cookies! Finding the agent of my dreams – meet family for dinner at our favorite Chinese restaurant! And today, on the official launch date for MURDER IN THE ABSTRACT, I’ve invited dozens of dear friends, family, and fellow crime authors to join me in a dance of victory at an art gallery/watering hole downtown because it’s good for the soul and because next week, I’m right back at the keyboard, polishing the second book in the series and I’ll need all the happy memories I can muster to make it through revisions.

Thank you, Jennifer, for letting me celebrate this day with you and your readers!

This book is one of the many that I purchased at the library sale. I picked it up for two reasons. I love the cover and how the woman is in the front... that tells me that, not only is she the main character, but she's, most likely, a strong independent woman. It is also the first in a series and I really enjoy reading historical series.

I'm not that far into it but, so far, it's pretty good... a little predictable, but then, it's a Christian romance. Most that I read are fairly predictable. That's okay, though. My reading tastes run the gamut and reading something like this is like watching a favorite movie. It's comfortable and makes me happy.

My bag today was was my black and white peace sign bag. Not only did it look good with what I wore, it was large enough to carry some things I bought at work. It's our Semi-Annual sale and it seems that I can never leave without purchasing something :D My husband call it my "keep me in lotion" job. I love that he "gets" me.

M has a Volleyball skills camp this week at J's new high school. She decided, a few months ago, that she wants to play on the volleyball team at her new junior high. We found this skills camp at his high school so she could really learn. If she keeps with it, she'll already know the high school coach (as she'll, most likely go to the same high school as J) and feel comfortable about playing there. She already knew one girl and will, hopefully, make a few new friends.

The Confessions of Catherine deMedici by C.W. Gortner

From C.W. Gortner's website... "At the age of fourteen, Catherine de Medici, last legitimate descendant of the Medici blood, finds herself betrothed to the King Francois I’s son, Henri. Sent from her native Florence to France, humiliated and overshadowed by her husband’s life-long devotion to his mistress, when tragedy strikes her family Catherine rises from obscurity to become one of 16th century Europe’s most powerful women.
Patroness of Nostradamus and a seer in her own right, accused of witchcraft and murder by her foes, Catherine fights to save France and her children from savage religious conflict, unaware that her own fate looms before her—a fate that will demand the sacrifice of her ideals, reputation, and the passion of her own embattled heart. . .
From the splendors of the Loire palaces to the blood-soaked battles of the Wars of Religion and haunted halls of the Louvre, this is the story of Catherine’s dramatic life, told by the queen herself."

C. W. Gortner, half-Spanish by birth, holds an M.F.A. in writing, with an emphasis on historical studies, from the New College of California and has taught university courses on women of power in the Renaissance. He was raised in Málaga, Spain, and now lives in California.
Acclaimed for his insight into his characters, he travels extensively to research his books. He has slept in a medieval Spanish castle, danced in a Tudor great hall, and explored library archives all over Europe. His debut historical novel The Last Queen gained international praise and has been translated into eight languages to date. His new novel, The Confessions of Catherine de Medici, will be published on May 25, 2010. He is currently at work on The Princess Isabella, his third historical novel, and The Secret Lion, the first book in his Tudor thriller series,The Spymaster Chronicles. You can visit C. W. Gortner’s website at http://cwgortner.com/

My thoughts about The Confessions of Catherine deMedici...
This novel was incredible from the first line (and you know how much I love first lines!)... "I was ten years old when I discovered I might be a witch." to the last sentence... you didn't really think I'd share that, did you?!?

I love historical fiction but have, until recently, read mostly about fictional characters. I really didn't know a lot about Catherine de Medici. I didn't "google" her until after I had finished this novel. I wanted to read this book without any preconceived ideas. Because I wasn't as familiar with Catherine's story as I should be (shhh... don't tell my history professors :D), I was very grateful for the map of France and the family tree of The Valois. I referred to both and didn't get lost with names and places. It's details like this that tell me that the author put thought into everything about his novel. If there are too many characters or places and I have to constantly go back and read a page or two to figure things out, I'm more likely to stop reading. A quick glance at the map and family tree assured that this novel read effortlessly. I appreciate things like that in my books.

Mr. Gortner chose to tell Catherine's story from her point of view. This, in my humble opinion as a reader, can make or break a story. He did it, flawlessly. There was never a point in the story when I "lost" Catherine's voice and "heard" the author's. Everything was as Catherine would interpret it... the dialogue flowed, the characters (both primary and secondary) were presented as she saw them and the settings described through her eyes. To take Catherine from a young girl through her tumultuous life and have me feel empathy for a Queen who, historically, is regarded as ruthless, domineering and, even murderous, takes great skill as a writer. To do it from her own point of view without losing historical facts and perceptions seems to very easy for Mr. Gortner.

I know not all authors choose the covers of their novels but I have to say that this cover is so striking. I hope Mr. Gortner had some say with this cover and is pleased with the results. I have seen The Confessions of Catherine deMedici at the bookstore and it is truly eye-catching. I know a huge trend in historical fiction cover art is women wearing beautiful period gowns. This cover takes it a step beyond. Yes, Catherine is wearing a beautiful period gown but she is standing in a hall that is dark, almost ominous... foreshadowing, maybe?

There is a afterword in which the author shares some of his thoughts about writing this novel as well as some other historical notes. I appreciate this because, after reading the book, I can tell he was thoughtful and careful he was to tell Catherine's story.

I read this novel with a more critical eye than I normally do as I knew I would be reviewing it. I came away thinking that it was so well-written and interesting that I would not have been disappointed if I had purchased it... which I will do for Mr. Gortner's other books. I'm now quite a fan of his work. Please check out his website for information about his other works.

***Thanks to Dorothy and Cheryl at http://www.pumpupyourbook.com/ and Random House for sending me The Confessions of Catherine deMedici by C. W. Gortner to read and write an honest review on my blog.***

Leverage & Rizzoli & Isles

We love Leverage at our house! It's a well-written show with a great premise. Tomorrow night is the season premiere. I love summer premieres because it means new shows!

Rizzoli & Isles is a new TNT show that I'm kind of on the fence about. It looks interesting but it also looks like it's trying too hard. I don't know... I could be completely off-base. I'll watch a few episodes and decide if I'll continue.

My bag today was a very inexpensive (okay, cheap :D) white bag that I bought at Claire's a few years ago. It has a lot of brass stud detailing. It's slouchy and huge. It will definitely fit a book, which is must for me!

Even though I switch bags daily, if not more... I don't switch my wallet and day planner as often. I probably change it more frequently than the average woman, but I definitely don't change it to match my bag. I had been using a Dooney & Bourke black Medallion wallet that matches my satchel and a black & white fleur-de-lis planner. I decided today that I needed to "summer" up my bag accessories so I switched everything to purple... my favorite color!! The wallet's purple, the planner's purple and the cosmetic case is purple. It makes me very happy when I look in my bag :D

“I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice – not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany.”
A Prayer For Owen Meany
John Irving

This is a no-holds-barred first line. It really lays the novel out for me. Irving's choice of the word "doomed" is definitely thought-provoking. You don't usually read that word as part of the first line.

This novel is only on my TBR pile because J is reading it next week. He tested into Freshman Honors English. Over the summer, he has to read Franny & Zooey by JD Salinger (already finished and he didn't like it), A Prayer for Owen Meany and the first 18 chapters of Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.

I had no intention of reading this until I was discussing his assignment with a friend. When I told her about this book, she, literally, gasped. She told me it was her all-time favorite book. As we talked about it and she told me why she loved it so much, I became intrigued with it. From what I understand, at its core, it is a Chritian parable. I love that, at his Catholic high school, they will read and discuss this novel and everything that it encompasses. So, I will read it with him.

I was all set to purchase this book new but, as luck would have it, I found both a paperback and a hardback copy of it as the library book sale a few weeks ago. J will read the paperback and I read the hardback. I won't start any discussions about the novel but I will follow his lead and talk about it if he wants to.

The film, Simon Birch, is based on this book. I've already put it in my Blockbuster queue and we'll watch it when we've finished the book.

I used one of my favorite summer bags... no, actually, it's one of my favorite bags, period. I love carrying this purse on a hot summer day but I'm so paranoid about getting it dirty. So, I only carry it when I can "baby" it. Silly, I know, but I want to use it for many summers. Today, it only went to lunch with a friend and to the library. I picked up M's hold book, 39 Clues by Jude Watson . I also talked with a librarian about a returned book on J's card. He is on an Arthur C. Clarke kick and checked out The Odyssey series a few weeks ago. He has read and returned them but one title keeps showing on his library record as still checked out. The due date had long passed but we weren't being charged any fines. I was told the book is in their system and it was just a glitch.

My Favorite Reads... The Pillars of the Earth

Each Thursday, Alyce at http://athomewithbooks.blogspot.com/ features a favorite book from the past. I love this idea and often participate. You can, too! Don't forget to leave a comment on her blog with a link to yours.

My Favorite Read today is The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. I thought about how much I love this novel as I was writing my Waiting on Wednesday post yesterday. I've read this book numerous times starting when it was first published in 1989. I've bought numerous copies to give to friends so they may enjoy it, as well.

There are so many reasons why I enjoy it. I've been to several English cathedrals that were built at that same time including Salisbury and Glastonbury. It is impossible to stand in those cathedrals and not be in complete awe of their beauty. To then consider the craftsmanship of the thousands who made it their offering to God is, literally, breathtaking.

The story, itself, is written in a style that I enjoy. Follett introduces many characters and alternates between them so that the action is fast-paced and stays interesting. The reader doesn't get bogged down in one character's story.

The Pillars of the Earth has one of the greatest first lines that has ever been written and you know how much I LOVE first lines... "The small boys came early to the hanging." If that doesn't evoke some emotion in the reader, I guess this book just isn't for you.

It's a miniseries and will premiere in July on Starz. We don't even have that channel but I'm ordering it just to watch it. It stars, among others, Donald Sutherland and Ian McShane, two incredible actors.

Almost twenty years after he published The Pillars of The Earth, Ken Follett wrote a sequel, of sorts. World Without End is also set in Kingsbridge (the original Pillars setting) but two centuries later and featuring descendants of the original characters. This novel can be read as a stand alone but provides a satisfying conclusion to The Pillars of the Earth.

My Bag today was my Liz Claiborne cheetah print hobo bag with a red patent strap. This is the only Liz Claiborne bag I currently use. There was a time, though, that Liz Claiborne bags were the "it" bags and I had plenty of them. We even returned early once from a camping trip so that I wouldn't miss the chance to purchase a bag I had put on hold. This was very early in our marriage and, even then, my husband indulged my love of handbags.

Book Blogger Hop... on Thursday... YAY!!

It's Thursday and Jennifer at http://www.crazy-for-books.com/ has posted her weekly Book Blogger Hop a little bit early!

ABOUT THE HOP: This is a weekly event, hosted by Jennifer at http://www.crazy-for-books.com/, where book bloggers and readers can connect to find new blogs to read. It's a great way to network with other bloggers and make new friends! Every day I seem to find another book blog that I start following. In the spirit of the Friday Follow, I thought it would be cool to do a Book Blogger Hop to give us all bookies a chance to connect and find new blogs that we may be missing out on! It will also give blog readers a chance to find other book blogs that they may not know existed!Your blog should have content related to books, including, but not limited to book reviews. If you start following someone through the Hop, leave a comment on their blog to let them know! Stop back during the week to see other blogs that are added! And, most importantly, the idea is to HAVE FUN!!

OPTIONAL TWIST: On your blog hop post, tell us about some of the other great blogs you've found while Hopping around! DISCLAIMER:The Hop isn't just for you to throw your link in there and not visit any other blogs. It's all about networking and finding new blogs that are of interest. So, in the spirit of the Hop, try to make some time to visit other blogs and don't post your link if you are not planning on visiting other blogs in the Hop that week. This is a weekly event, so if you don't have time this week, that's fine! We'll see you next week!If you sign MckLinky, please share the love and POST ABOUT THE HOP ON YOUR BLOG! Waiting on Wednesday

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted Jill at http://breakingthespine.blogspot.com/
My WoW is Fall of Giants by Ken Follett. It will be published in September, 2010.
There are so many reasons I'm excited about this novel!
~ It's by Ken Follett. I really enjoy his novels.
~ It's the first in a trilogy. I love reading series books. It's wonderful to know that if you love a book, the story will continue after the last page.
~ It's a "chunkster"... I never really heard that phrase in connection with books. I always called them BFBs (Big Fat Books) but I think "chunkster" is a great term.
~ It's a family saga. Again, that's one of my favorite genres. I like the intertwining stories of a family saga.

I know there are ARCs of this novel floating around the book blogosphere. If you've been lucky enough to read it, please let me know your thoughts.

My bag today was my Coach Legacy Stripe Tote. I haven't carried this bag for a while as it's kind of "fragile". I'm not quite sure what the fabric is but italmost feels like silk. So, I'm very careful where I carry it.

Ten Things About Me

Because I have some great new followers, I decided to do a list of ten things about me. I'll try to stay away from the obvious (you know... that I love Bags, Books & Bon Jovi!) and things I already blog about.

1. I like to read gossip magazines... People, US Weekly, Life & Style etc. They're horrible, I know and I'm WAY out of their target demographic. I've noticed, though, they all run the same pictures. I would think with all the paparazzi, there would, at least, be different angles of the Brad and Angelina.

2. My favorite song, right now, is Smile by Uncle Kracker. It reminds me so much of my husband that it's now his ringtone when he calls me :D

3. As a matter of fact, I like most, if not all, Uncle Kracker songs.

4. I'm not a mean-spirited person. I'm really not, but I'm SO happy that J & M are not going to our neighborhood schools for middle and high school. There are some parents that I'm ecstatic that I will never have to see or deal with again! Is that mean? I think not!

5. I think Adam Richman from Man Vs. Food on The Travel Channel is kind of cute. Although, I'm afraid he's going to keel over of a heart attack.

6. We haven't been to Las Vegas in a while and I'm really, really wanting to go! I want to stay at New York, New York in The Empire State Building! How fun would that be?!?

7. M wants to donate her hair, again, to Locks of Love. She did it two years ago. She had her hair cut and then we went and had her ears pierced. She left looking like one kid and came home looking completely different.

8. I'm looking forward to the new show, Hot in Cleveland. I like all four of the actresses, especially Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick. I read today that it's produced by Sean Hays... you know "Just Jack"... love him!

9. I'm a night owl and love being up, by myself, watching TV and surfing the internet. But I hate how tired I am in the morning. I know the solution is to go to bed earlier but I never do :D

10. Last but not least... Thank you for following me!!

Another Blog Hop... It's a Bunny Hop!

I am absolutely loving reading all the new blogs I've found through blog hops. Well, I've found another blog hop that looks like a lot of fun. It's The Bunny Hop and it's hosted by Erin at http://droppedstitches72.blogspot.com/ From her blog... "There are a growing number of fun blog hops out there; this one's mine. You don't have to share a craft, a tip, or any other area of brilliance, just share your blog!
For the uninitiated, a blog hop works this way: Join my blog. I WILL follow you back, but it may take me some time to get to all of the blogs. Then add your blog to the list. Grab the button and publish it and the info about the hop and IN A SEPARATE POST, post it on your site (please add the button to publicize the hop - the more people that know about it, the more participants we'll have). Ad your linky to the list. Check out the other blogs and join them if you like them. It is super kind to follow anyone who follows you - you give a little, you get a little. So, let the fun begin!"

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Please look around and I hope you enjoy what you read. Leave a comment so that I can visit you.

Facebook & Design Star

A few weeks ago, I set up a Facebook specifically for book blogging. If you're on Facebook and would like to "friend" me, please do! Because I'm a little (okay, a lot!) technically challenged, I couldn't figure out how to set it up under "Bags, Books, Bon Jovi"... if you know how I can transfer everything to a page with that title, please let me know! To find my Facebook page, please search "Kathy Bags". If you "friend" me, please leave me a note with your blog title.

Design Star starts tomorrow night. I'm so excited. It's one of my favorite shows. I have not, purposely, read about the contestants, read the blogs or message boards. I want to start watching it without any preconceptions. After the first episode, though, I'll be all over the internet reading everything I can :D Do you watch it? et me know and we can discuss it!

I wanted to carry a cute summer purse today but it was cloudy and rainy all day... the high was only 57°... so I carried one of my trusty black bags. I guess because I carried it, I noticed several women who had bags with chain handles. I know it's very "Chanel-esque" but it definitely gives a bag an edge.

First Line Friday, A Reunion & Girls With Great Taste

"13 November 1918
Tension threatened to ruin what should have been a joyful reunion for two of the people in the ornate Yorkshire parlour; a mood dictated by the third, an attractive young woman."
A Complicated Woman
Sheelagh Kelly

What a prefect first line, don't you agree? It has everything... a great setting, a bit of a mystery (why is there tension?), and an interloper. How could I not be intrigued by this?!?

This is one of the library book sale books. I bought it for three reasons... the gorgeous cover (although mine is a cropped version... but still great), a line on the back ("Set in York and Australia between the World Wars...) and that it's 580 pages (I love "chunksters!). This novel is the perfect "by the pool" read.I love reading by the pool because it's pure reading time. There's nothing else to do but sit and read... and, occasionally, dip my feet in the water. As much as I love to read at home, there's always that little voice that says there's a load of laundry that could be done, the dishwasher needs to be emptied... blah, blah, blah. At the pool, though, none of that can happen! I can only read! I love summer!

We picked up M at her Outdoor Education camp today. She was exhausted, a little sunburned but surrounded by new friends. She had an amazing time! She fell asleep in the car and slept soundly until 7pm.

I carried my Kathy Van Zeeland leopard purse tonight to work. Two of the women complimented my bag. A has one almost exactly like it... when she saw mine in the locked cabinet, she thought, for a second, it was hers :D N loves KVZ bags and said she was a little jealous that she doesn't have a leopard KVZ.

Thanks to everyone who has found my blog through Jennifer's Book Blog Hop. Welcome to you all! I'm so happy that you like what I'm writing. Like most of you, I'm sure, I write for myself, first. I like having this place to put my thoughts down... especially about three of my favorite things... Bags, Books & Bon Jovi! But, it's fun to know that there are people who also like what I write and how I present it. And for me... it's so cool to find other book bloggers who share my taste in books. Even reading blogs that favor genres that I don't read can be interesting because of who is writing it. So, thank you reading my blog. As always, please leave a comment so I can read your blog!
